T-ara: What just happened?

So let’s try to understand what just went down at chez CCM. This is not necessarily how things played out but my interpretation of events, coming from someone who has worked in management and PR. It’s often quite easy to see why certain decisions have been made once you have experienced what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes.

So don’t take this as fact. After all, I’m just another faceless person on the internet.

Here are my conclusions and my thought process for these conclusions will be laid out below the list:

1. Hwayoung was at least being isolated by the group (or at worst actively abused) to the point where she was becoming a distraction (or she is not a credible threat for the rest of the group in KKS’s if-you-are-lazy-someone-will-replace-you philosophy)
2. T-ara members were responsible for isolating/bullying Hwayoung but they too are victims with their spirits broken and forced be who that are to survive.
3. KKS implied that he has some serious dirt on Hwayoung.
4. The Ryu twins didn’t know about the decision to cut Hwayoung (or are pretending not to have known) until the announcement was made.
5. KKS is willing to destroy Hwayoung’s career to save Jiyeon and Hyomin.
6. KKS is still a dick: he is calling Hwayoung a diva who has no manners.
7. By firing Hwayoung, he isn’t letting them off the hook for the recent behaviour: he actually tightens is iron fist around T-ara by showing that he will do whatever the fuck he likes with any member, even firing them and ruining their public reputation.

Though it’s just conjecture at this point (and probably will forever remain as such), this analysis of the T-ARA situation makes a lot of sense.

(Makes me sad that Hwayoung’s career seems murky after all this.)

SM Rappers

I know it sounds really harsh but I think the “rappers” in SM are an insult to actually talented rappers. I don’t think it’s the fault of the idol, but of the company. SM seems to think that rapping is just a replacement for singing, which it is not. Looking at underground rappers and idol rappers who actually do it for their love of rap, not because they can’t sing, you can hear the difference. GD and TOP, Bang Young Gook, Zelo, E.via, Drunken Tiger, Jay Park, Zico (though from different parts of Korean music, pop and hip hop) these people rap because of their love for it, not because they can’t dance or sing. 

An example of an SM rapper I cringe at is Minho from SHINee. I am a huge SHINee fan, they were my first kpop group. But, Minho has no talent for rapping at all, and honestly neither does Key. They have no flow and really don’t have the voice for it. Nothing about Minho is outstanding musically or in dance so they make him a rapper. Why do kpop groups feel the need to stick a rap in their songs anyway? Any of the artists I mentioned before could definitely in my opinion be recognized in a hip hop/rap genre, I think Minho would get eaten alive. SM really needs the rethink their “rappers” and what rapping actually is. It really kills me when I see these poor excuses for rappers they have.

TBH, I think the only one in SME who has the potential to become a good rapper would have to be EXO’s Chanyeol. In Two Moons, you can actually hear that he actually flows and doesn’t just sing-talk like a lot of other SME rapper. Even so, I still think he wouldn’t stand a chance at a legit rapping competition.

But to me, the worst part is that it’s rare for the designated “rappers” to ever show improvement. Many rappers sound the EXACT same as their debut days, which means they haven’t been coached on how they can improve. I don’t think this problem is just limited to SM either. Not gonna throw out any names, but I wish the whole industry could learn that idols who talk quickly to a beat with lines that semi-rhyme =/= rappers.

IMO, lines by rappers like Tablo, GD&TOP, Zelo, Jay Park, and Outsider can be imitated but never reproduced perfectly. Their lines don’t sound manufactured and included in the song for the sake of having a rap; instead, they are used by rappers as their primary form of expression. I can hear, feel, and see the essence of those rappers whenever they perform.
